## Green roofs reimagined: A synergy of solar energy and stormwater solutions for smarter future

Rooftops represent up to 25% of city surface area. In dense urban areas, where every m2 counts, that represents a huge opportunity for solving endless urban challenges - escalating energy demand, urban heat islands, and the rising risk of flooding from intense rainfall events. In response, with innovative green roof technologies, the use of rooftops has been reshaped.

By integrating solar panels with advanced green roof stormwater management strategies, solar green roofs are emerging. In this blog, we’ll explore the transformative potential of these solutions. We will discuss how green roofs as stormwater management tool, combined with photovoltaic (PV) systems address energy efficiency while mitigating stormwater issues. We will also review recent scientific research that quantifies these benefits, and finally, we’ll analyze how real case green roof solutions lead the way in practical applications.

1. **Tackling energy efficiency and urban water management with green roofs and solar panels**

Nowadays, majority of roofs are being utilized exclusively for solar energy installations, for greening, or in the worst-case scenario, for nothing. Energy efficiency should be one of the main reasons for rethinking the smart use of these often unused building surfaces. Why is this so important? With the increase in population growth throughout the past few decades, people tend to spend more time indoors. The desire to possess a more comfortable indoor experience has led to a drastic increase in building energy consumption. Statistics show that the global primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions have increased with an annual average of 2% and 1.7%, respectively. According to the predictions, building energy consumption will increase by 32% to 2035 due to the increase in urbanization practices throughout the world (Jayasooriya V. et al., 2023). But furthermore, modern cities demand dual– or multi - purpose intervention systems that do more than just add aesthetic appeal or for energy. Green roofs have traditionally been recognized for their ability to insulate buildings, reduce the urban heat island effect, and improve air quality. But when we combine them with solar panels, the benefits multiply. Here’s why:

***1. 1. Energy efficiency: keeping cool while generating power***

Traditional building envelopes are not resilient to energy loss—especially when the sun’s rays heat up the building or frosty weather with low temperatures cool the surroundings. But with green roof, in summer season vegetated roof layer acts as an insulating blanket, preventing heat gain and heat loss in winter. By this, it also contribute to the microclimate at roof level. When solar panels are installed above or within green roof layers, they operate at lower temperatures. Cooler panels mean more efficient photovoltaic activity because high temperatures can reduce their power output. Recent simulations have shown that the solar panels’ electrical production on the green roof (solar roof), can be enhanced by approximately 4% across all seasons, and producing 14,16 MWh more than conventional solar roof. Moreover, solar green roof reduced 11,55 t e-CO2 more than conventional solar roof. Additionally, up to 1,56 t CO2 was removed by plant biomass (Fleck et al., 2022). The combination of these two very compatible technologies yield with optimal results.

***1.2. Water management: harnessing nature’s drainage capabilities***

Cities across the globe struggle with stormwater management—in heavy rain, paved surfaces funnel water rapidly, overwhelming drainage systems and leading to urban flooding. Here, green roofs step in. The vegetation increases the roof’s water retention capacity, decreasing peak levels and slowing down runoff. When appropriately designed, green roofs also filter runoff and increase its quality. Integrating solar panels into green roofs does not hinder this capacity; in fact, innovative designs allow panels to still benefit from the evapotranspiration process of the plants. Water consumption on green roofs is likely reduced when solar integration is optimized to cover the right proportion the roof area. The shade provided by the panels, combined with the cooling effect of plant transpiration, further contributes to moderating roof temperatures and extending the time available for water to be absorbed or evaporated naturally.

***1.3. The synergistic effect: more than the sum of its parts***

When integrated thoughtfully, green roofs covered in solar panels can yield benefits greater than those offered by either technology alone. The key lies in the synergy between solar panels and stormwater systems:

- *Enhanced Cooling*: Vegetation cools the solar panels, which in turn operate more efficiently.

- *Water Retention*: The structure holds stormwater, reducing runoff and the likelihood of flooding during extreme precipitation events.

- *Microclimate Regulation*: Lower roof temperatures contribute to lowering the ambient urban temperature, which benefits both residents and the local infrastructure.

Cities can simultaneously solve energy and water challenges through an integrated design of the two well-known technologies into win-win combination.

**2. Reviewing the science—quantitative evidence & insight into solar green roofs**

In recent years, several scientific studies have rigorously investigated the dual benefits of integrating green roofs with solar panels. These articles not only validate the advantages discussed in Chapter 1, but they also provide detailed, quantitative metrics that demonstrate how effective these systems are in practice.

***2.1. Research highlights and quantitative findings***

- **Water Consumption Reduction: **  The study of Pirouz et al. (2025) in Mediterranean climate, which evaluated the dual impact on water consumption and electricity generation, revealed that with a solar coverage of 60%, the water consumption of a green roof could be reduced by up to 30.8%. The reduction in water demand is attributed to the shading effect of the PV panels, which lowers the temperature on the green roof and thus reduces the evaporation rate. Together with optimized electricity output, this investigation demonstrates the benefits of solar green roofs, which can generate more electricity and require less irrigation.

- Electrical Output Improvement:  The Pirouz et al. (2025) also showed that the output from photovoltaic panels was increased by roughly 4% when installed as part of a green roof system. Optimal performance was noted at a coverage rate of approximately 50%, where the natural shading and cooling maximally benefit the photovoltaic efficiency.

Another research (Pena Munoz et al., 2024), employs a water-energy-carbon nexus approach to design these integrated systems. This study quantified not just energy and water metrics but also the potential for carbon reduction and has been recommended especially for implementation in low-income housing.

Additionally, as Jayasooriya et al. (2023) discuss, photovoltaic systems on green roofs have the potential to yield as much as 244.39 kWh/year per square meter over a typical 20-year lifespan under optimal conditions. In contrast, green roofs alone deliver less energy-saving potential per square meter over a 50-year lifespan. While that may seem relatively modest compared to the photovoltaic potential, it is crucial to note that the primary benefit of green roofs extends beyond energy production—focusing on stormwater management and urban cooling.
- **Energy Transition and Carbon Balance:**
The integration of green roofs and solar panels was found to create additional thermal insulation, which lowers refrigeration and air conditioning needs in buildings. This dual benefit contributes to a reduction in energy consumption and, consequently, a lower carbon footprint. For clarity, here is a table summarizing these key quantitative findings from recent studies:

| Parameter | Value/range | Reference |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Water consumption reduction | Up to 30,8% reduction with 60% solar coverage | Pirouz et al, 2025 |
| PV electrical output increase | Approx. 4% increase (max at 50% coverage) | Pirouz et al., 2025 |
| PV yield potential | 244,39 kWh/year/m2 | Jayasooriya et al, 2023 |
| Enhanced thermal insulation | Contributed to a measurable reduction in building HVAC loads | Pena-Munoz et al, 2024) |

2.2. ***Integrating the findings into urban design***

The quantitative evidence from these studies provides a solid footing for advocating the use of solar green roofs. The numbers are not merely academic—they have real-world implications. For example, urban planners and architects now have concrete performance metrics to justify investments in dual-function systems. When cities adopt these integrated systems, they not only generate renewable energy and manage stormwater but also combine renewable energy generation with stormwater management.

***2.3 The broader context of research findings***

Traditionally, green roofs and solar panels were developed as independent technologies. However, the modern imperatives of climate change demand a systems-based approach. Researchers are increasingly emphasizing that cities should embrace multifunctional infrastructures that deliver multiple co-benefits.

Research indicates that combining photovoltaic systems with stormwater management can provide multiple functional benefits, depending on system design and local conditions.

**3. Urbanscape green roof solutions—bringing vision to reality**

While the scientific literature provides compelling evidence for the benefits of integrated green roof systems, it is vital that these concepts are turned into tangible results on urban rooftops.

Urbanscape’s approach to green roof design addresses multiple urban challenges simultaneously—from mitigating urban heat islands and managing stormwater to generating renewable energy. Key features of the Urbanscape system include:

- *Lightweight and versatile designs:* Traditional green roof systems often require heavy substrates that can limit application on older or structurally weak buildings. Urbanscape solutions use specially engineered mineral wool substrates that are lightweight yet effective in supporting vegetation. This innovative medium replaces traditional soil while reducing structural load, enabling installation on a broader range of properties.
- *Integrated Stormwater Management:* Urbanscape green roofs are designed for stormwater management. Systems are designed to capture, retain, and slowly release stormwater. This controlled release minimizes the immediate impact on urban drainage systems during heavy rainfall, reducing flood risks. The ‘Detention Green Roof’ concept is particularly noteworthy—it not only captures water but also provides a buffering system that prepares the roof for subsequent storm events, thus ensuring continuous performance.
- *Synergy with Solar Panels:* Urbanscape solutions are also designed to seamlessly integrate with solar panel installations. The design ensures that the vegetation and the solar panels complement each other harmoniously. By allowing for partial coverage, vegetation may contribute to lower temperatures around PV panels, depending on system design and conditions. This combination allows PV generation and stormwater management functions to be integrated within the same roof area.
- *Thoughtful design for user friendly maintenance*: Often, the owners of solar green roof projects meet a recurring challenge – shading and disruption of PV production caused by unplanned vegetation growth. To meet this challenge, Urbanscape low nutritional shallow substrate with low demanding varieties of Sedum plants, specifically adapted to harsh environment. By this the growth of unwanted vegetation, which needs deeper substrate with rich organic matter, is significantly prevented.
- *Vegetation and urban aesthetics*: Urbanscape green roofs introduce vegetated surfaces into urban roof areas and can support different planting concepts depending on the selected vegetation.

Such approach goes beyond mere installation—it's about holistic integration: systems are designed with flexibility in mind, making them adaptable to various building types, climates, and local regulatory requirements. By this, even rooftops that previously could not support traditional green roofs can now be transformed into multipurpose energy and water management hubs.
